When you step off the beaten path, pitching a tent by a crystal-clear lake or finding solace under the northern lights, you’re participating in a tradition that’s centuries old. In Sweden, this tradition has a name: allemansrätten. Translated loosely as “the right of public access,” allemansrätten gives everyone the freedom to roam, explore, and camp on most public and private lands—as long as you do so respectfully.
For Electric Outdoors, this concept is at the root of who we are as a company. Our founder, Josef Hjelmaker, was born and raised in Sweden, and grew up with allemansrätten as a way of life. And today, it’s the foundation of our mission: making off-grid camping and sustainable glamping attainable and accessible for all.
Rooted in centuries of respect for the land, the spirit of allemansrätten is alive and well in everything we do at Electric Outdoors. It informs not only how the company was founded, but also how we’re reimagining outdoor exploration through sustainable technology, thoughtful design, and respect for nature.
What Is Allemansrätten?
Allemansrätten is enshrined in the Swedish constitution and so deeply ingrained in the culture that most Swedes take it for granted. It means you can hike, cycle, ski, camp, and forage in forests, fields, and mountains without needing permission from landowners. However, it also carries an important counterpart: “Do not disturb, do not destroy.”
In short, the key principles of allemansrätten include the freedom to roam; a deep-seeded responsibility to respect nature, wildlife, and property; leaving no trace along your way; and the respect for the peace and privacy of others. For centuries, this philosophy has fostered a uniquely egalitarian relationship between Swedes and their landscapes—one based on mutual trust, stewardship, and the idea that nature belongs to everyone.
While not every country has a formal equivalent to allemansrätten, the spirit behind it—unfettered access to the outdoors paired with personal responsibility—resonates around the world.
Allemansrätten, Reimagined for Today’s Adventurers
At Electric Outdoors, we see allemansrätten as more than just a compelling concept. It’s a call to action.
We believe everyone should have the freedom to explore remote places without sacrificing sustainability or comfort. Yet, modern eco-conscious adventurers face new challenges:
- Environmental impact concerns: Traditional camping infrastructure can strain fragile ecosystems.
- Ability to be present in nature: Crowded, overbooked campgrounds don’t feel like an authentic experience with nature.
- Accessibility and power issues: Many remote campsites lack off-grid power capabilities and electric vehicle charging options.
That’s where our solutions come in.

Electric Outdoors builds off-grid camping and glamping systems designed for the electrification era. Our approach blends innovation with a deep respect for nature, making it possible to harness solar power in remote areas, charge EVs far from the grid, and relax in glamping sites that offer both comfort and a minimal environmental footprint. Every destination we unlock is thoughtfully designed to offer a seamless, tech-enabled experience while treading lightly on the land.
We’re taking the age-old Swedish idea of open access to nature—and giving it a 21st-century upgrade.
How Our Swedish Heritage Shaped Electric Outdoors
Our founder, Josef, grew up on the West Coast of Sweden and spent much of his childhood immersed in nature, going camping, biking, and canoeing. During the long summer breaks, his family traveled in an RV or boat, island hopping along the coastline north of Gothenburg—a favorite West Coast tradition. This easy exploration and connection to nature were possible because of allemansrätten.
As he transitioned to the U.S., working for years in the RV industry, Josef saw firsthand how limited outdoor access was compared to Sweden. Most of the camping and outdoor recreation options in the U.S. are strictly regulated at public parks and private campgrounds. He also noticed that sustainability and environmental principles often took a backseat to convenience, which ultimately changed how people were experiencing nature.
Electric Outdoors was born to bridge that gap. We aim to democratize remote camping and make sustainable outdoor adventures not just possible but easy.
Today, every aspect of our design, every campsite we enable, and every adventure we support carries that same Swedish principals: freedom, respect, and connection with nature.
Why Sustainable, Off-Grid Camping Matters More Than Ever
Nature is under pressure. Climate change, over-tourism, and habitat destruction are real threats. That’s why Electric Outdoors prioritizes solutions that work with nature, not against it. We use solar energy and other renewable sources to power remote sites, design low-impact infrastructure that fits naturally into the landscape, and integrate smart systems to keep resource use minimal and responsible.
Consumers are demanding eco-conscious experiences, and we’re proud to deliver them.
Studies from McKinsey and NielsenIQ show that consumer sentiment is rapidly shifting in favor of sustainability. People are actively seeking out brands and experiences that align with their values, especially when it comes to environmental responsibility. This shift is reshaping expectations across industries, including how people approach outdoor experiences, and as a result companies that prioritize sustainable practices not only future-proof themselves—they also capture greater market share.
At Electric Outdoors, we’re proud to be part of a movement that gives consumers more meaningful, eco-conscious ways to connect with nature.
Off-Grid Camping: The Future is Here
Imagine driving your EV deep into a forest, arriving at a serene lakeside glampsite, and plugging into a solar-powered charger—all without leaving a mark on the land. Electric Outdoors makes this kind of experience possible.
